What is a Cataract?

A cataract is when your eye's natural lens becomes cloudy, leading to a gradual loss of vision.  Proteins in your lens break down and cause things to look blurry, hazy or less colorful.

clear vs. cloudy lens (cataract)

The lens bends (refracts) light rays that come into the eye to help us see. The lens should be clear.

If you have a cataract, your lens has become cloudy. It is like looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract.

Symptoms of Cataracts

  • Blurred or hazy vision:  Cataracts cause a gradual decline in vision quality, making objects appear blurry or less sharp.

  • Sensitivity to light:  Individuals with cataracts often experience increased sensitivity to light, leading to discomfort in bright environments.

  • Reduced night vision:  Cataracts can make it challenging to see clearly in low light conditions, such as at dusk or nighttime.

  • Difficulty with colors:  Colors may lose their vibrancy or appear faded due to the clouding of the lens.

  • Seeing double:  Cataracts may cause seeing double of an object or a ghosted image.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure that involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
